About Me

Hello! Welcome to the About Me page for Aaron Maurer or as I am known in school and online Coffeechug. Coffeechug is a nickname that stuck with me back when I taught sixth grade social studies and was Emperorer Coffeechug during an ancient Rome simulation. I have not lost the name due to the fact that I am always seen with a cup of coffee in hand.

I am a gifted education teacher for Bettendorf Schools in Bettendorf, Iowa. I have been serving in this capacity since 2009. I work with grades 4 and 5 in a pull out program where they are transported to the middle school for class two days a week(separate days for each grade). I also teach extensions/enrichment for grades 6-8 during the rest of the day.

When the school day is over my day is just beginning with my duties as a First Lego League Robotics coach, 8th grade boys and girls basketball coach, and running intramural football for sixth grade. I am blessed to be married to another amazing teacher and person and we have three children. We are called the A Team for our first names: Aaron, Amanda, Aiden, Addyson, and Ava.

This blog is a collection of my thoughts and ideas. They are in no way associated with the schools that I work for and do not reflect the thoughts of anyone except me.

My goal with this blog and everything I do in life is to challenge myself and others in their lives and thinking. I hope you find the content useful and look forward to connecting.

I am always available to present and speak if needed. I have all past presentations  shared on this blog along with all projects shared on the sidebar.

Where To Start?

If you are new to this blog, then I would suggest looking at the tabs at the top of the blog. This is where I place links to priors posts that I feel are important enough for others to be able to find easily. They are my more popular posts that people have found useful.

My Bio

Despite what you might think about me I was born into a completely normal family with normal parents and a brother. I was born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana about 15 minutes from Notre Dame. Yes, I support the gold and blue and I also support the Hoosiers!!!! Life was somewhat normal in my first couple years here on Earth. A loving pack of monkeys grabbed me by the tail and took me high into the trees to live. There they cleansed me of bugs and fed me bananas and termites from trees. It was there that I learned my alphabet in sign language and learned to be laid back and patient.

Finally, I proved too large for the trees and made my way into school at the age of hairy armpits. I was adopted by a family of turtles who took great pleasure in coffee. That is why you will see me drinking coffee all day everyday and usually it is from Starbucks or Trader Joe's. Mommy Turtle taught me to drink the best and to always grind my own beans.

Eventually I graduated from Elkhart Memorial High School and continued my education at Ashford University in Clinton, IA(that is how I made my way to Iowa). It was there that I pursued my teaching degree and I also played college basketball.  I never smelled such delicious scents as I did in my years in Clinton. I met my wife in college and we both were very fortunate to find teaching jobs in the Quad Cities.

We are now blessed to have our family of five. We have a son, Aiden, who is a Minecraft junkie. Addyson, is our middle child and she is the free spirited imaginative one, and last but not least we have Ava, who being the third keeps us on our toes at all times.

In my free time which rarely exists I am an avid reader, robotics junkie, Lego lover, and triathlete. I love to constantly challenge myself to new skills and adventures. I look forward to sharing these journeys here on this blog and with anyone who dares to follow along.
