Running Outdoors In Iowa: Favorite Winter Running Gear

We have been spoiled by the weather so far here in Iowa. I have not yet had to break out layers and layers of clothing. This is a good thing because I really don't own much winter running gear.

That is why I am posting this:

What is your favorite winter running gear?

I want to run outdoors all winter. I cannot do the treadmill all winter. Nor will I allow myself to go without running until Spring. I want to keep my base and perhaps make some further improvements. I need gear. I would love to hear from the running community what you run in?

Shoes, pants/tights, jackets/shirts, gloves, hats, nutrition, etc.

Leave your favorites in my comments. I will be buying myself some X-Mas presents this year to get me outdoors.

Thanks for your help

I want to make sure that I am not cold like I was when eating this donut at the Living History Farms Race

A couple items I picked up last year that I highly recommend
1) Under Armor face mask - this is perfect for those sub zero days that are surely on their way in Jan/Feb
2) New Balance NBx Welded Half-Zip - got this for christmas last year its perfect for those cold windy days, and its semi fitted so if you need to layer up its a perfect middle layer under a sweatshirt or fleece.

As far as pants I usually just wear cheap warm up style pants that you get from JC Penny or Target for 15-20$, and seeing as how I refuse to wear tights er... running pants they seem to work just fine for me.

One suggestion I would pass along if you find yourself running alot in snow/ice try a pair of trail shoes. I slipped and fell alot last year and wearing shoes with heavier trends really helped alot.

Josiah, thanks for the suggestions. Great ideas. I do need to consider new shoes and moving to trail shoes for the winter would be a wise investment. We will have to get together one of these days for a run or bike.
