Book Review: Famous Players by Rick Geary

BOOM! I know I am on a roll with these Rick Geary graphic novels. I cannot stop reading them. I am addicted to them as the Hollywood stars are in this graphic novel.

From Amazon.com

It's the early days of Hollywood - movies are just starting to come into their own and gain in popularity. New stars are made, but they are certainly not in the scandal sheets. Amidst this new world, Willian Desmond Taylor, a successful director at the Famous Players Studio, is found shot dead in his home - could it have been the star Mary Miles Minter, or a former butler? Another delectable mystery as only Geary can tell them!

This was an interesting read. I was not really into the whole mysterious death storyline of this graphic novel like I was the other two that I have read, but I was really digging the time period. I really enjoyed reading about Hollywood and how it all started. I found it fascinating and interesting about how many early Hollywood stars died so young due to drugs and suicide. It is quite alarming and a little scary. I am not sure why this was the case. Rick Geary mentions that cocaine became quite popular during this time. I guess everything that glitters is not always gold.

This book was from a different series by Rick Geary. This series has moved to the 20th century and is part of the A Treasury of XXth Century Murder. The cases are more recent than the Victorian age series. I did find the life of William Desmond Taylor fascinating with his name change, leaving of his family, making it in Hollywood, and having a private life that he kept under wraps.

This one is perfect for those of you who love the crazy lifestyles of the rich and famous. The 1922 setting was interesting to me and in the end nobody really knows what happens to this guy which makes these stories so engaging to me. Off to find more Rick Geary graphic novels.
