#CoffeechugCAFE Podcast Series: Living on Edge of Chaos - Episode 7: Todd Henry

Todd Henry is the author of two great books - The Accidental Creative and his latest release Die Empty. You can check out his website http://www.accidentalcreative.com/ where you can find his podcasts and all social media links.

I read Accidental Creative a few months back and absolutely fell in love with this book and his work. http://coffeeforthebrain.blogspot.com/search?q=todd+henry

I then pre ordered Die Empty and absorbed that book even more so. I liked it even more than Accidental Creative. The basis of the book is to help people, companies, businesses, and organizations do their most important work. As I read this book I could relate almost all of it to education and to the many ideas that I am striving for within my own job in education.

I sent Todd an email about chatting with me on this podcast and I jumped for joy when he said yes.

Here is the link to his latest book, Die Empty: Unleash Your Best Work Everyday

Living on Edge of Chaos Podcast - Episode 6 - Clive Thompson

Holy Cow! Did I just type in the title that I chatted with the writer and author Clive Thompson? The writer for New York Times, my favorite article in every issue of Wired magazine, and the author of my favorite read of the year Smarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds For The Better (click the book icon below to buy)

Yes, I did just name drop that. Clive took time out of his busy schedule to chat with me for about 45 minutes to talk about how the new literacies and emerging technologies are shaping our world with a lens on education.

I feel quite honored to be able to present this podcast.

It was a chat that left me tweeting

Go ahead and give it a listen, leave me some feedback on iTunes and let me know what you thought of the conversation. I did have some audio recording issues so my last question where I ask Clive to speak about predictive technologies was lost. That is a bummer as he gave such an awesome answer. I think the rest of the podcast will leave your brain full and you will finish listening excited to know more.

Coffeechug Cafe Podcast #2: Why Classrooms Need To Go Global and Real World

Click to Listen

I do apologize for my voice during this podcast. I had a bit of a head cold as of late. I hope to be back to normal soon.

In order to go global in your classroom and develop a real world audience, you have to first understand WHY you need to go global and bring in a real world audience. I believe there are four key reasons WHY you need to connect with the world and bring down your classroom walls before you learn HOW to accomplish this goal.
  • 1. Power of One
  • 2. Idea Generated Jobs
  • 3. Real World Skills
  • 4. It is our reality
This podcast will address why these four reasons are so important for understanding why we need to expand our classroom boundaries to a global perspective.

I will be creating a future podcast about HOW to do this and share my experience and journey from starting very small to where I am today. There is not enough time in one podcast to do both.

Listener Questions

Brett Murrey @Sciology asked two great questions

  1. How do you increase your audience to reach more people in a global classroom?
  2. How can I develop myself as an educator to bring exposure to my teaching practices for real world or global classrooms?

Announcements

  • Still looking for suggestions for a 10-15 second theme song.

Training - Week 3 - Friday 4 Mile EZ Run & IT FELT EASY!!

I had to switch days in my first week of marathon training this week. I was supposed to run 4 miles yesterday, but after storms all morning and teaching Lego Robotics in afternoon I did not run. My legs felt like crap anyways so maybe it was a good move.

I ran today despite being up since 4:00 with Ava. I forced myself out the house to run and once I began I actually felt wonderful despite my body feeling like poop still.

I was supposed to run 4 miles easy. I made sure to run easy because I have a 10 mile run tomorrow and I have not ran double digits in about 2 months. I am actually nervous, but I need to get over the mental wall.

I ran 4.53 miles in 36:04 for a pace of 7:58. I felt really good. This run felt easy the entire time and when I finished I was not tired or worn out. The day of rest was a good move and this is also a sign that what I am doing must be working. I have trying to eat healthy and really just listen to my body while running.

I hope I feel this good tomorrow morning when I run.

I tried something new today. Instead of going without music and instead of listening to music I decided to try a podcast. I have experimented with many podcasts and actually listen to a few while in my basement on my Mac, but never while running.

This morning I listened to an episode of NPR: Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me. It was awesome. It really helped me lose track of time and just run. I saw this recommendation is the July issue of Triathlete magazine that I subscribe to(this is May issue to the left and not the one I am referring to.).

The magazine has some wonderful tips and training(I would like to do a triathlon at some point in time) and one of the pages listed five podcasts to listen to.

NPR: Wait Wait...Don't Tell Me will have you laughing while staying current with news events from around the world. I just downloaded all the old podcasts to listen to in my future running.

What do you listen to? I am always up to trying new things.

Last, I knocked out the third day of week 1 in the 100 Push-Up Challenge I am working on.

Set 1: 14
Set 2: 16
Set 3: 12
Set 4: 12
Set 5: 16+ (I fought for 20)

Off for a long run tomorrow. Until next time........

Coffeechug Concepts Podcast Ideas

I have fallen behind on my podcast series.

Coffeechug Concepts Podcast is officially available on iTunes. I know about anybody can get accepted, but it sure makes me feel good.

Anyways, I have been working on some topics for my next few podcasts and just thought I would throw the bait out to see if anyone wanted to chomp at the bit and suggest a few other topic ideas.

I am open to about anything.

Otherwise, I will continue with nerdy rants.

I leave you with a lyric, can you find out where it is from?
"So many people talking, I cannot remember what I was going to say."

Coke Machine of Happiness

I love this video. So simple, but yet is spreads so much happiness.

I am not going to ramble this time because it is not necessary.

What are you providing each day to help spread happiness to those around you?

I think if we took time each day to work on spreading happiness we would be amazed at how quickly it would spread. This would only takes seconds each day.

This goes back to my first podcast about taking the time to not cast a critical eye, but to show your happiness and appreciation for others.

So I begin another technology tool experiment

My new toy came in today. This is old news for many bloggers and educators, but I am going to experiment with podcasting. Why? I would like to get to the point where I can record some of my teaching moments and post online for students to use. I would really like to use it in a few days as I explain a new project idea that I will be unveiling to my 8th grade extension students, but not sure if I will be ready.

To practice podcasting, I need a topic. What should my first podcast be about? Leave suggestions in the comments and I will take the first one that strikes my fancy.

Podcast will be posted here on the blog.

Suggest away my fellow nerd clansmen.
